About this domain’s name

Disclosure

The name on this site belonged to a real ballot committee. This desk is not it, and here is exactly how the two relate.

“Driving Arkansas Forward” was the name of the committee that campaigned for the Arkansas casino amendment in 2018. This domain was that campaign’s website. The campaign ended; the domain carried on, and what publishes here now is an independent desk writing about gambling money, odds arithmetic and licensing. The name stayed because the addresses stayed.

What this means in practice

This desk is not the committee, has no connection to it, is not funded by it and does not speak for it or for anyone who supported or opposed the amendment. Nothing published here after the campaign should be read as the committee’s position, and nothing the committee published should be read as ours.

Why the old pages are still here

Deleting them would be the easier choice and the wrong one. They are a primary record of what a ballot campaign told voters: the amendment text as filed, with its four licences and the counties named in it; three promise pages dated 19 March 2015; the storefronts, libraries and farmers’ markets where signatures were collected; and the page that held the campaign videos. They are kept at their original addresses, in their original wording, including the committee’s own “paid for by” line where it appeared, and every one of them is marked as the 2018 archive.

The whole archive is listed under Arkansas. Those pages stop at the vote — nothing in them says what came after it — and this desk does not put words in their mouth.

No byline, on purpose. Material here is signed by the desk and not by an invented person: if you see a name on a page, it belongs to someone quoted or to the author of a document, never to a persona we made up to look like a staff of ten.

Each number has an owner. Revenue lines, tax shares, licence numbers and dates are copied from the filing, report or operator page that holds them, and the sentence using a figure says where it came from. Where the source has no figure, this site leaves the sentence out instead of estimating one.

Mistakes get fixed in place. Point one out at [email protected]: the wrong line is rewritten on the page you read it on, with the old wording quoted underneath, so the change is visible rather than quietly swallowed.
